The Hidden Kingdom might be the most visually impressive so far in the Wings of Fire series because the Rainforest Kingdom is so bright and colorful. Glory finally gets the spotlight, and she’s probably the most sarcastic and relatable dragonet yet. The plot about the disappearing RainWings is a little darker than I expected, but it makes the story more gripping.

The second graphic novel in the Wings of Fire series focuses on Tsunami, and you can feel her strong personality on every page. The SeaWing kingdom looks amazing in comic form, especially the underwater scenes. The mystery surrounding Tsunami’s family is interesting, and even though she can be stubborn, it’s easy to understand why she acts that way after everything she’s been through. The pacing is good, with a mix of action, secrets, and emotional moments.

The first Wings of Fire graphic novel does a great job introducing the world of Pyrrhia and the dragonets who are supposed to end the war. The art is colorful and really helps bring the dragon tribes to life, especially how different they all look. Clay is an easy character to connect with because he’s caring but also unsure of himself, which makes him feel realistic.

Evan is an Insta-influencer with a good eye for romance—particularly, with setting up couples. When shy Natalia transfers to his high school and joins the Gay Straight Alliance that he runs, Evan can tell that she needs a bit of help in the love department. With Natalia under his wing, Evan attempts to set her up with multiple people, despite his best friend, Davi, warning against it. And while Evan focuses on Natalia’s love life, he might be missing out on a romance of his own and pushing his own feelings to the side...

Dwellings by Jay Stephens is a graphic novel that blends cute and cartoonish art with dark and disturbing tales of horror set in a fictional Canadian town. Despite its whimsical appearance, each of the 6 stories packs a punch, giving us a peek into the eerie depths of the human (cartoon?) psyche.

Heartstopper is a beautiful story of gay panic and romance. The main story, of course, is the romance of the two main characters: Nick and Charlie. The multiple side character romantic subplots and reflections on the difficulties of high school and the prevalence of homophobia tie it all together.

Whisper of the Woods by Ennun Ana Iurov is the author's first professionally published graphic novel. It's about a young foreigner, Adam, who travels to a supposedly haunted forest in Romania to search for his friend who had gone there solo and vanished. Ignoring the advice of the locals, Adam arrogantly assumes he is above the supernatural forces obviously at play.

Takeo Goda, is the kindest soul alive who will literally save kittens and children, but his large and rough appearance is off putting to most girls and adults. Sunakawa, (Suna) is Takeo’s best childhood friend who actually cared about Takeo. Suna is handsome and all the girls Takeo falls in love with hate him, but fall in love with Suna. Until he meets Yamato, a kind, nice girl who likes to bake. Takeo doesn't want to get his hopes up anymore but when Yamato keeps making him cakes, Takeo can't help himself from falling in love.

You Died: an anthology of the afterlife is a 2020 graphic novel comprised of 24 short pieces by different authors and illustrators, all relating to death, dying, grief and various depictions of an afterlife. This is a beautiful rollercoaster, as optimistic, inspiring and grounding as it is haunting.
