Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman

Josh Malerman (Bird Box) brings a realistic and scary imagining about every child’s nightmare-  a very real and very scary monster in the closet. After the usual routine 'Good nights' from her parents, a voice oozes from the closet… “Can I go inside your heart,” says the Other Mommy to 8 year old Bela. During Incidents Around the House (2024), Bela’s parents, Daddo and Mommy, quickly learn that what they first believe is a made-up friend from the closet is much more than imaginary.  This Other Mommy just isn’t quite happy to stay put.  Bela, as the book’s only narrator, takes us on a creepy and disturbing journey as her family fight to stay together, safe and alive.

This horror story, with a loveable tiny main character and written like a screenplay, is a very fast moving story; a story that I raced to finish so I could sleep well knowing that Bela was safe and sound…

For more atmospheric horror, try We Used To Live Here (2024) by Marcus Kliewer and Baby Teeth(2018) by Zoje Stage.
