In 2023 Dublin, after Saoirse has an argument with her boyfriend about whether or not to have children, she meets an older woman, Maura, on a train platform, who turns out to have been instrumental in the founding of the 1970s Irish Women’s Liberation Movement. Impulsively, Saoirse decides to join Maura on the train ride to Belfast as Maura shares her story of being a young woman trapped in an abusive marriage and of her friend Bernie, a mother of three who is told that another pregnancy will kill her (but with all forms of contraception illegal, the only choice she and her husband have is complete abstinence). Maura and Bernie eventually are put in touch with other women who are beginning to fight for women’s rights, culminating in a daring train ride to Belfast, Northern Ireland, to bring contraception back home. The Women on Platform Two (2025) by Laura Anthony is an ode to all the women who bravely paved the way for the rights women have today.
