Youth Services Associate Part-Time

The Wheaton Public Library is seeking applicants for the part-time position of Youth Services Associate.  This staff member assists the Youth Services Department Head with the operations of the Youth Service’s Department. This includes, basic reader’s advisory and reference questions, general directional questions and assistance in youth programs.

Salary: $16.97/hour, includes PTO, vacation and IMRF benefits

Hours: 25 hours/week.  Schedule includes afternoons, evenings and weekends; special events as needed.

Position Details:

  • Works under the direction of the Youth Services Department Head to support the goals and strategies established for the department.
  • Serves on the Youth Services team to assist with programs for children and all ages both online and in-person.
  • Provide basic instruction on using the online catalog.
  • Assist in providing basic reference and readers’ advisory to all children.
  • Maintain an atmosphere that fosters creativity and learning.
  • Have thorough knowledge of library policies.
  • Assist in development and maintenance of ongoing passive programs, this includes make and take and activity stations.
  • Assists in material selection and compilation for book match, book bundles and curbside.
  • Assist in outreach programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • This position may require working during any of the hours that the Library is open, including evenings and weekends.  Although a weekly schedule is established, the needs of the Library may require schedule changes and flexibility.

Education & Experience Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Familiarity with a variety of children’s materials.
  • Experience in public libraries and/or customer service preferred.

General Physical & Mental Requirements:

  • Sitting, walking, standing, stooping, bending, lifting up to 25 lbs., and pushing carts weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Crouching, kneeling, climbing onto or sitting on low stools to retrieve materials from high or low shelves.
  • Looking at a computer screen and retrieving and processing information for long periods of time.
  • Requires repetitive hand and shoulder movement.
  • Good vision and hearing.
