NEIGHBORS TOGETHER PROGRAM SERIES

Nine public libraries (Carol Stream, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Glen Ellyn, Indian Prairie, Itasca, Naperville, Westmont, and Wheaton) are offering this program series to promote Literacy DuPage, a local organization that teaches English to adults, and to highlight the diversity of DuPage County. Immigration-themed events will take place throughout the month, and members of all libraries are welcome to participate in any of the programs

Join us for this engaging discussion of thought-provoking non-fiction titles. In September, we will discuss

Funny in Farsi: A Memoir of Growing Up Iranian in America by Firoozeh Dumas

This memoir chronicles the journey of Dumas’s wonderfully engaging family as they adapt to their new home in pursuit of the American Dream. In deftly drawn scenes, they grapple with English (hot dogs and hush puppies?), traditions (Thanksgiving turkey?—it tastes like nothing), and culture (Firoozeh’s parents laugh uproariously at Bob Hope, although they don’t get the jokes when she translates them into Farsi). It is an unforgettable story of identity, discovery, and the power of family love.
