Wireless Access Specifications
The Wheaton Public Library is 802.11b and 802.11g compatible. There are eight WAPs (Wireless Access Points) which cover most of the public seating areas. In some cases it may be necessary to move to a different location for optimum reception.

You will need:

  • A laptop computer
  • Wireless Network Interface Card (NIC)
  • Any software or drivers necessary for your NIC to work with the library's Internet connection
  • To disable any pop-up blockers on your laptop
Tip: Pop-ups may be blocked from a number of different sources including Internet Explorer, Norton Internet Security, Yahoo toolbar, Google toolbar and others. If you are unable to access the Internet after you log in, it is most likely caused by a pop-up blocker.

Set your wireless device's software using the following configuration:

  • Mode: Infrastructure (the connection method)
  • SSID: WPLPublic (the name of the wireless network is case sensitive)
  • WEP: disabled (disables Wired Equivalent Privacy)
  • IP or network settings: DHCP enabled or obtain IP address automatically

    Printing:
You cannot print to a Wheaton Public Library printer from a laptop.
Tip: Try emailing a document to yourself. Then use one of the library Internet stations, located on the 2nd floor, to access your email and print your document. The library charges 10¢ per page for black and white printouts and $1.00 per page for color printouts.

    Security:
WiFi (wireless access) poses the same risks to your personal information as other Internet connections.

    Please Note:
Library staff cannot provide technical support if you are using your own device. Please refer to your owner's manual or other support services offered by your device manufacturer.
