Friends Annual Meeting and Special Program
Thursday, May 8, at 7 p.m. in the lower level meeting room
Everyone is invited to help the Friends of the Wheaton Public Library celebrate their 5th anniversary on Thursday, May 8, at 7 p.m. After a very brief business meeting and election of officers, we’ll take a slide tour of Illinois Carnegie libraries. In the first 20 years of the 20th century, hundreds of public library buildings were built in towns across the United States through the philanthropy of Andrew Carnegie. Illinois ranks third in the total number of libraries built with Carnegie grants and our speaker, Annette Baldwin, has been traveling throughout the state and recording this rich cultural history. You’ll be amazed at the variety, beauty, and preservation of these buildings. If you’re a library lover, you’ll enjoy this fascinating program. You don’t have to be a member of the Friends to attend this program—though of course we’d love to have you join! And what’s a celebration without refreshments? Join us for the meeting, program, and treats in the library’s lower level meeting room.
Garden Day Sale
Saturday, May 17 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. on the west plaza of the library
Garden plants, gardening knowledge, gardening supplies and garden treasures can be found at the Friends of the Wheaton Public Library Garden Day scheduled for Saturday, May 17 on the West Plaza of the library. Perennials from member’s gardens go on sale at 9 a.m. continuing until 4 p.m. (or until the plants are gone!) In addition, gardening tools, pots, and other treasures related to gardening will be for sale. Garden experts from the Master Gardener program of the DuPage County Extension Service will be available to answer gardening questions during the sale.
This fund raiser is sponsored by the Friends of the Wheaton Public Library. Members and nonmembers are encouraged to donate gardening items for the sale. Bring donated items to the library anytime. Plants should be identified and include care instructions if possible. Please do not bring donations of plants to the library until May 16 (the day before the sale) or bring them on Saturday morning between 8 – 9 a.m. All proceeds from this fundraiser benefit the Wheaton Public Library. Additional information is available at 630-868-7592.
Help maintain Adams Park
Our group is taking on a new effort due to begin this spring. We are committed to helping maintain Adams Park (the park just west of the library) by weeding one quadrant of the park on a regular basis. If you are already a member of the Friends and would like to volunteer for this project, please leave your name and phone number at the Reference Desk. Members are asked to renew their annual membership each May. A renewal letter goes out in April. New members are always welcome.
Become a Friend
Membership in the Friends is open to all with dues ranging from $5 for Seniors and Students, $15 for families, through $50 for Best Friends. Membership applications are available at the library or print an application and return it with your annual dues.
