Volunteer to sort donations and work the sale
Where can you buy hardcover and paperback books, DVDs, VHS tapes, CDs, LPs, cassettes, video games, and audio books at incredible bargain prices? At the Friends Book Sale!
Beginning September 24 through September 28, this mega sale will feature more than 30,000 books filling the Lower Level Meeting Room and lobby area. Every year buyers find like-new fiction and nonfiction bestsellers, tempting cook books, classics, intriguing titles you never knew existed, and just plain fun reads. In addition, you will find collectible LPs, VHS movies, music CDs and a variety of DVDs. You won’t find children’s material at this book sale. We have decided to hold a very special Children’s Only Book Sale in June 2015 - including VHS, DVDs and audiobooks. However, there will absolutely be some fabulous children's books and other items in the Holiday Sale that will be priced as such.
Just a reminder: No electronic devices of any kind are allowed in the sale. That includes laptops, cell phones, scanners, etc. Also, No strollers or book carts at the sale.
The Book Sale is the biggest fundraiser of the year for our Friends group. Members of the Friends sort the donations, organize shelves, and ring up sales. All money raised at this sale benefits the library. The $30,000+ raised at last year’s sale funded our popular Overdrive downloadable eBook and audio book subscription, purchased Mango Languages and Learning Express subscription databases. It also funded our year-long concert series, special events, and our summer reading programs.
If you’d like to help with any aspect of the sale, join the Friends! Membership applications are available at the Information Desk or online. Members of the Friends are invited to attend the Preview Sale on Wednesday evening, September 24.

Volunteer to Sort Donations and/or Work at the Sale
Volunteers are needed for sorting donations and working at the sale. Sorting the donations begins the week of September 2 in the lower level and continues until right before the sale. If you have never worked on the book sale you'll need to attend a short training session. For information on becoming a Friends, getting training to sort and helping with the book sale, pick up a membership application, fill it in and mark you interest in helping with the Sale. Someone will contact you with the details. Membership application are available at the Information Desk or online.
Sorting will start in the lower level during regular weekday library hours 9/2-9/23. Those Friends who have been trained to 'sort' are welcome and encouraged to join us.
Training for "Book Sale Sorting" will occur on:
Tues. Aug. 26 - 1pm and 7pm - 3rd floor
Wed. Aug. 27 - 10 am - 3rd floor
Thurs. Sept. 11: 10 am and 7 pm - Lower Level
You must sign up to participate in a training session by emailing us at email@example.com or calling Carolyn at 630-469-6117.
Members of the Friends are invited to attend the Preview Sale on Wednesday evening, September 24.
About the Friends
Wheaton’s Friends of the Library group was started in 2003. Anyone can become a member by filling out the application and paying the annual dues, which range from $5 for Seniors and Students to $50 for Best Friends. The dues, along with all the money raised throughout the year, go directly to benefit the library. Current Friends members are asked to renew their memberships each May. A renewal letter is sent in April.
Our main fundraising event is the September Book Sale and many people join just to help with this huge undertaking. A smaller Holiday Book and Art Sale is held in November and a Garden Day Sale is held each spring. From May 2003 through May 2012, the Friends have contributed over $200,000 to the Wheaton Public Library. Money raised by the Friends has been used for concerts,
a fireplace in the Quiet Room, summer reading book fair, storyhouse mural, databases such as Mango Languages and Learning Express, ebooks, parking lot banners and programs for children and adults.
Besides working on our fundraising events, volunteer opportunities include serving on the Friends Board, assisting with special library projects or programs and helping maintain Adams Park.
Become a Friend
Membership in the Friends is open to all with dues ranging from $5 for Seniors and Students, $15 for families, through $50 for Best Friends. Membership applications are available at the library or online.
